Get Ready or the 2023 Herring Count!

It’s time for herring count volunteer training!

If you will be counting river herring with us this year along the Marstons Mills River and at Boat Cove Creek, you are invited to the Clean Water Coalition’s first in-person training session in three years on Wednesday, March 8th from 4:30pm to 6:00pm at the Osterville Village Library (43 Wianno Avenue, Osterville).

The guest speaker, John Sheppard of Diadromous Fisheries Biologist for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), will talk about how DMF estimates herring run sizes collected by volunteers - LIKE YOU!

Chris Nappi from Barnstable's Department of Natural Resources will also give an update on the status of Barnstable's herring runs. Heather Rockwell conduct a quick refresher on counting and scheduling instructions.

If you are planning to attend the training please RSVP to Heather here.

If you are unable to attend the March 8th training and still want to count herring this year, let her know by clicking here and she will send you the recorded version of the training session.

Heather is updating the Volgistics scheduling calendar so you can start scheduling your counts at the fish ladders after the March 8th training.

As always, please contact Heather with any questions. We hope to see you at the library on March 8th!
